Piss & Vinegar is a magazine that is kind of about food. Really, it is a vessel for food service venting, raving, exuberance, hatred, and love. Sometimes it uses food and food culture as a launching point for cultural critiques at large, other times it uses food and food culture simply
to make a stupid little joke.
We’re looking for any and all service workers, writers, photographers, and artists to contribute anything they’d like! If you have an idea that doesn’t fit into the following formats,
please reach out so we can work together to bring your idea to life in print.
pissandvinegar86@gmail.com
“Short Gripe”
Mad? Good. Write about it.
“Short Gush”
Love something? Convince others why they should too.
“Cultural Critique”
This world sucks so fucking hard. Share your perspective on that.
“Personal Essay”
How do you identify with food and food culture? DISCLAIMER: before writing one of these, think: “is this actually interesting, or am I just trying to validate my existence?”
“Reviews / Ratings”
We’re not looking for restaurant reviews. We ARE looking for reviews of anything else: your coworkers, the eatability of single ingredients, bananas from Walmart. Literally anything
you want that is NOT you pretending to work for the NYT. Although, if you did that in tonality, but reviewed something like the board game selections at local dives, I’d probably be into it.
“Photo Essay”
Interpret this how you want. You’re the artist, not me!
“Poem”
Can you define what a poem is? Me neither. Poems about food, food culture, or service.
“Comic”
Comics are cool.
“Art”
Have an idea in mind? Send it over. Want to draw, paint, take photos, or create art for the magazine but don’t have a concrete idea? Hit us up! We will pair you with some writing that
needs visuals.
“Small Business Portrait”
We’re only looking for a couple of these per issue, and the scope is more narrow than the other formats: How does this business exhibit the concept of “Piss & Vinegar”? Does the owner
do everything themself? Does the business have to navigate difficult local ordinances to execute their vision? Are they fighting an admirable legal battle? Are they doing something a specific
way that makes their life harder, but refuse to back down from their ideals? Are they kick-ass? These portraits are more in-depth and require a conversation between you and the
magazine before beginning. We’d like to work with you to include photography, interviews, and
whatever else may be important for the piece.
We love to talk—especially about food, writing, and selfishly, this magazine. PLEASE feel free to shoot us a message to begin “a dialogue” about working together.
